You’ve booked your newborn pictures, your baby is finally here, and now you’re wondering what exactly happens during a newborn session.
Will your baby cooperate? What should you bring? What if they cry the entire time?
First, don’t worry! After more than 12 years of photographing newborns, I can tell you that babies have their own plans, and that’s perfectly fine.
My goal is to make your newborn photography session as easy and relaxed as possible. You’ve already done the hard work of bringing that sweet baby into the world. Let me take care of the pictures!
What Happens When You Arrive at the Studio?
When you first arrive, we’ll spend a few minutes chatting and getting everyone settled. There’s no need to rush right into pictures.
Once we’re ready, I usually start with baby’s individual portraits. I like to get some of those sleepy, curled-up poses finished first while baby is comfortable and settled.
But here’s the thing about newborns. They’re the boss!
Sometimes we need to switch things around depending on how baby is doing, and that’s perfectly fine.
What Should I Bring to My Newborn Photography Session?
Good news! You don’t need to pack a suitcase for your newborn session.
I provide all the wraps, outfits, blankets, and props we’ll need for baby’s pictures.
Of course, if you have something special you’d like to include, please bring it! Maybe it’s a blanket Grandma made, a tiny stuffed animal, or something that’s been passed down through your family.
Otherwise, just bring your baby and the usual diaper bag essentials. I’ll take care of the rest!

Do I Need to Help During My Newborn Session?
Nope! In fact, this is your chance to sit back and relax!
Once we get started, you can get comfortable in my studio’s seating area while I take care of photographing your little one.
I’ll handle the wrapping, posing, and soothing. If I need an extra set of hands, I’ll let you know, but for the most part, you get to enjoy a little break.
You’ve just had a baby. I think you’ve earned a few minutes to sit down while someone else does the work!
Can Parents and Siblings Be in the Pictures?
Absolutely! Depending on the collection you choose, we can include parents, siblings, or the whole family.
I typically start with some of baby’s individual portraits, especially the more challenging poses, before bringing everyone else in.
After family photographs, I’ll finish any individual baby pictures we still need.
Of course, sometimes baby has other plans. If that happens, I’ll adjust the order so we can keep everyone comfortable and make the most of our time.
And if you’re worried about bringing a toddler along, I have a little play area at the studio to help keep older siblings entertained between pictures.

What If My Baby Cries or Won’t Sleep?
Then we take a break!
I promise you’re not going to have the first baby who’s ever cried during a newborn session.
Some babies sleep through almost everything. Others need extra snuggles, feedings, or a little more patience.
That’s why I follow your baby’s lead instead of sticking to a strict posing schedule.
We can take time for feeding, diaper changes, or whatever your baby needs. And if a particular pose just isn’t working, we’ll move on to something else.
Beautiful newborn pictures don’t require a perfectly cooperative baby.
How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Take?
Full newborn sessions can last up to three hours, but that doesn’t mean we’ll necessarily need all that time!
I allow plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and those little breaks babies sometimes need.
Most sessions are comfortably finished within that three-hour window. But every once in a while, a baby just isn’t having it. And that’s okay!
If we’ve reached the point where your little one has had enough, we’ll talk about our options rather than pushing through and making everyone miserable.
Your baby’s comfort and safety will always come first.
What If I Want a Newborn Storybook?
Traditional newborn portraits are beautiful on their own, but I also offer personalized Storybook Sessions for families who want something a little different.
Your baby’s photographs become part of a custom-written story, printed in a beautiful keepsake book.
It’s a way to remember those first tiny details while giving your child a story they’ll someday get to read about themselves.
Because those early days go by quickly, and there’s something pretty special about being able to pull their very first chapter right off the bookshelf.
